Pineapple Express (2008)

Fun, quirky, entertaining. This perfectly cast movie has questionable directions throughout in terms of plot, but like its focal subject, it is oddly addictive and makes for a good source of escapism. Recommended? This type of humour is not for everyone, but anyone who can make it through the first half-hour will likely enjoy the rest of the movie.

At first, it is hard to believe that a two hour movie about smoking marijuana could work. But once the story kicks in, this movie turns out to be quite entertaining. It is the kind of movie where anyone expecting a mindless comedy will be impressed, but those expecting anything more will be disappointed.

One interesting thing about this movie is seeing how far Seth Rogen, James Franco and Ken Jeong have come in their careers since it was released. All three actors, the latter only seen briefly, show strong potential in their performances and have come quite a long way since then.

The movie does not capitalize on “laugh-out-loud” comedy, instead aiming for light-hearted fun. Most of the laughs in this film come from laughing at how ridiculous the predicaments in the movie are as opposed to the characters’ sense of humour. Surely, audiences more inclined to this style of humour will find far more laughs throughout the film to enjoy.
