Chelsea News: Where the Blues Need to Reinforce

Jose Mourinho has built a very good, and almost complete team at Chelsea. There are some places that could do with some purchases that will complete the team, though. Where need Chelsea reinforce?

In net, Mourinho can choose from Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois, so they have one of the best goalkeeping forces in the world. In defence, John Terry and Gary Cahill are there along with Kurt Zouma, but the former two are ageing. On the defensive flanks, Chelsea has Cesar Azpilicueta, Branislav Ivanovic and Filipe Luis, and Zouma can deputise in this position too (Ivanovic deputising in centre back is a possibility too). In midfield, Nemanja Matic, Ramires, John Obi Mikel and Cesc Fabregas are all options to choose from, though it seems Mikel isn’t good enough, Fabregas needs to be pushed further forward and Matic burns out eventually due to being overplayed. In attacking midfield, they can choose from Eden Hazard, Juan Cuadrado, Willian, Oscar and Loic Remy can play there too. Up top is perhaps their deepest position, with Diego Costa, Loic Remy, Didier Drogba and there’s also a young Patrick Bamford waiting for a promotion to the first team.

Chelsea wouldn’t be wrong to go for a young centre back. Gary Cahill is ageing and he’s been poor as of late, while John Terry will eventually burn out. As for fullback, they may want to keep someone from their academy near should two of their 3 world class fullbacks go down. Nathan Ake is supposed to be talented at left back.

In midfield, Fabregas needs to be playing further up the pitch (or next to someone who can tackle in a 4-3-3), while Eden Hazard and Juan Cuadrado seem like good long term options on the wing. They certainly don’t need any strikers.

Chelsea’s priority should definitely be a complete midfielder; a great target for them would be Allan Marques, 23, from Udinese, who seems to be one of the most underrated players on the planet. He can go box to box, and goal count is the only thing that keeps him behind Paul Pogba, 22 (the higher price range target). That way, a hypothetical midfield of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Cesc Fabregas can destroy most, if not all midfields in Europe. A midfielder would also be helpful considering Fabregas has a tendency to wear down during the second half of the season, as Oscar and Fabregas would both offer something different to the high central midfield position.

In defence, Chelsea needs a young but ready presence. Aymeric Laporte, 21 and Raphael Varane, 22 seem like good targets. The French duo from Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid respectively look like the two best centre backs under 23 in the world. Varane seems unrealistic, while Laporte seems ideal for Chelsea.

Though Chelsea could use a fourth fullback, they already have one of the 3 best sets of fullbacks in the world. I could also see Willian at right back being a good experiment to try during preseason next year.

Chelsea is already good enough to win the Premier League for this year. Now, they have to work towards the Champions League, and these are the foundations they have to be looking for.
