The Manchester Derby has become a showcase of arguably the best footballing city in the modern world- both City and United have left marks in European and English football in recent years. Though Manchester City has been the dominant side in previous meetings, United is in the better run of form of late- and they look like they’re raring to be unleashed into Old Trafford and capture their 6th win in a row. Wednesday’s action in the Champions League wasn’t as close as Tuesday’s in the Champions League, and 3 of the 4 teams in the action showed exactly why domestic form is vital in the Champions League race.
Borussia Dortmund saw devastating 5-1 aggregate defeat to Juventus after the Italians comfortably put 3 past them at their home stadium, the Westfalenstadion. Manchester City was incredibly lucky on the defensive side, as Joe Hart comfortably saved them, but City was only able to get forward in the 2nd half, a half that just happened to be a poor showing from Sergio Aguero. Yesterday’s Champions League action had me glued to the TV for almost 3 hours. After Arsenal saw elimination at the hands of Monaco on away goals, I switched quickly to watch the cagey Atletico Madrid taking on the sturdy Bayer Leverkusen in overtime. It’s the overtime that made me realize the leading theme of the footballing day: tiebreaking decisions.
Arsenal exited on away goals, while Bayer Leverkusen surrendered to Atletico in shootout. Watching the heartbreaking shootout is what made me realize that, though shootout isn’t the fairest tiebreak in the world, it still is a great deal better than away goals. (more…)
Argentina barely overcame the Swiss today, taking 118 minutes to even open the scoring. The Swiss players were fantastic, and ultimately should’ve won the match in the 1st half, but Argentina took the challenge and Angel Di Maria stepped up to the plate alongside Lionel Messi. (more…)
France did well to overcome the stingy Nigerians today. Although Nigeria played well, France overcame them late and scored 2 goals to take it. (more…)
Costa Rica has been brave today, winning a match that was tough for them. Not only did they go down to 10 men, but they ran out of substitutions, their goalkeeper’s shoulder and knee were injured (and he saved a penalty), and Greece equalized to take it to extra time in the 90th minute. It is a beautiful afternoon in Fortaleza, with blazing hot temperatures and a fantastic football contest. Netherlands soared through a very difficult group, while Mexico was the best side in their group in terms of all round play. Today, Netherlands came back from being down 1-0 to win 2-1 before extra time, after Sneijder’s opening strike in the 87th sparked many events. Let’s look at the day’s events. (more…)
